RSS, or "Really Simple Syndication," is an XML-based format used to broadly distribute web site links to news, publications or other types of information -- not unlike a news wire service. It may be used to distribute not only text, but also images, audio and video. When a new item is published to a web site (or a particular part of a site), RSS users are automatically notified via headline links that are delivered straight to their desktops. The links arrive via a simple application, often referred to as an "aggregator" or "reader." With a reader, RSS users are able to receive frequent updates from sources of their choice -- quickly scanning headlines or following the links to read the full text.

While RSS Feeds benefit web site owners by making their content more easily accessible at little or no cost, subscribers benefit by:
  • Receiving automatic updates to information of their choice, grouped by topic with the latest news at the top;
  • Eliminating or at least reducing the need for web browser bookmarks or email newsletter subscriptions that may clutter up inboxes;
  • Regaining control of the desktops by subscribing (or unsubscribing) to information of their choice.
